GnosisDAO Votes to Settle Directly on Ethereum, Dropping Validator Set

GnosisDAO has approved a proposal to transition Gnosis Chain into an Ethereum Economic Zone rollup, a move that ends its current independent validator model and ties its settlement layer directly to Ethereum.

What the EEZ Framework Actually Changes
Gnosis Chain has operated as a standalone blockchain with its own validator set – a design that gave it independence from Ethereum’s base layer but also meant its finality and security guarantees were separate from Ethereum’s. Under the newly approved plan, that architecture changes at a foundational level. By becoming an EEZ rollup, Gnosis Chain will settle transactions directly to Ethereum rather than relying on its own validator network to reach consensus.
The Ethereum Economic Zone concept positions participating chains as extensions of Ethereum’s economic and security perimeter rather than as independent competitors. Chains inside that zone inherit Ethereum’s settlement guarantees, which removes the need to bootstrap and maintain a separate validator base. For Gnosis Chain, this means the cost and complexity of running an independent validator set gets replaced by a dependency on Ethereum’s existing infrastructure.
This is not a trivial operational shift. Maintaining a live validator set requires ongoing coordination, incentive structures, and security assumptions that are entirely local to the chain. Once Gnosis Chain moves to EEZ rollup status, those responsibilities transfer upward to Ethereum’s layer, and the chain’s security model is only as strong – or as constrained – as Ethereum’s own.
The vote itself passed through GnosisDAO, the decentralized governance body that controls strategic decisions for the Gnosis ecosystem. DAO-level approval means the transition carries the weight of on-chain governance rather than being a unilateral technical decision by a core development team. That distinction matters for how the change will be perceived by validators and stakeholders who currently participate in the independent validator set being phased out.
Ethereum’s Gravitational Pull on Neighboring Chains
Gnosis Chain’s move reflects a pattern that has been building across the Ethereum ecosystem: chains that once positioned themselves as Ethereum alternatives are increasingly choosing alignment over independence. The EEZ framework provides a formal path for that alignment, offering settlement on Ethereum’s base layer in exchange for giving up the autonomy that comes with a self-sovereign validator network.

For Ethereum, each chain that settles directly to it strengthens the economic case for ETH as the foundational settlement asset. Every transaction that finalizes on Ethereum generates demand for block space and, by extension, for ETH itself. Gnosis Chain processing its settlements through Ethereum rather than through its own validator set means that activity – and the fees attached to it – flows toward Ethereum’s base layer.
The practical question for current Gnosis Chain validators is what happens to their role. An independent validator set exists to produce and attest to blocks, earning rewards in exchange. When a chain migrates to rollup status, that function is absorbed into the rollup’s sequencing and proving infrastructure, which settles to the parent chain. Validators who participated in Gnosis Chain’s independent model face a fundamentally different set of options after the transition completes.
Gnosis Chain has long had a distinctive position in the ecosystem. It was one of the earlier chains to implement proof-of-stake before Ethereum’s own Merge, and it has maintained a community of validators drawn partly by lower hardware and staking requirements compared to Ethereum mainnet. The decision to dissolve that validator set into an EEZ rollup structure ends a chapter that predates Ethereum’s own shift away from proof-of-work.
There is also the question of what EEZ membership signals for a chain’s identity. Rollups that settle to Ethereum are, by technical definition, dependent on it – their security model is borrowed rather than self-generated. Gnosis Chain, by accepting EEZ status, is explicitly trading one form of sovereignty for access to Ethereum’s security and settlement infrastructure. Whether that trade strengthens or dilutes Gnosis Chain’s appeal to its existing user base is a tension the project will have to navigate through the transition.
Settlement, Security, and What Comes Next
The approval is a governance decision, not an immediate technical deployment. Moving from an independent validator chain to a functioning EEZ rollup requires implementation work – sequencer infrastructure, proving mechanisms, and the actual deprecation of the existing validator network. GnosisDAO’s vote authorizes the direction; the engineering determines the timeline.

What the approved proposal leaves open is the specific structure of the rollup itself – whether it uses optimistic or zero-knowledge proofs, how withdrawals to Ethereum will be handled, and what the finality windows look like for users bridging between Gnosis Chain and Ethereum mainnet. Those details will shape how different the user experience feels after the transition, and whether liquidity and application developers follow the chain into its new architecture or treat the migration as a reason to reconsider their deployment choices entirely.
